Uke: "receiver", the student who receives techniques that the teacher demonstrates or in partner practice with another student.


Shidachi the person who is receiving or responding to a threat or attack. ideally this is the person meant to successfully end the encounter.


Uchidachi the person initiating an attack, and usually meant to be defeated by


Kaeshi waza "Reverse Technique". when uchidachi performs a counter to shidachi's technique and reverses the situation, ending the encounter.

Kenshusei Student in training to become a teacher

derives from three Japanese words: “Ken” which loosely means ”to polish” or “to clean;” “Shu” which means “mastery;” and” “Sei” which means “student.” Taken together “Ken-Shu-Sei” translates to “a student who strives for mastery through polishing,” or one who seeks to develop in a given art or way through diligent training and persistent effort.
